The government jobs report issued Friday shows that businesses have slowed their pace of hiring to a relative trickle says recent CNN report.

“The job losses during the Great Recession were so off the chart, that even though we’ve gained about 600,000 private sector jobs back, we’ve got nearly 8 million jobs to go,” said Lakshman Achuthan, managing director of Economic Cycle Research Institute.

US looses 7.9 million jobs

More frequent recessions: Despite signs of slowing economic growth, Achuthan is not predicting that the U.S. economy is about to fall into another downturn later this year.

“We’ve entered a era where the United States will see more frequent recessions than anyone is used to,” Achuthan said.

One of the big problems is that many of workers who have lost jobs were in industries that are not likely to recover their former strength.

“We’ve got the wrong people in the wrong place with the wrong skills,” said John Silvia, chief economist with Wells Fargo Securities. He said construction workers in California or Florida and auto workers in Michigan will have to relocate and retrain to find new jobs.

“As many as half the people who lost their jobs will have to find something else to do,” said Silvia.
The unemployment rate is currently 9.5%. A return to the 4.4% rate it was the summer before the recession started in 2007 is out of reach.

In fact, the Federal Reserve, in its latest forecast, predicts that unemployment will stay around 7% or above through 2012, and in the 5% to 5.3% range in the long-run.

According to CNN.com, some of the world’s richest and most successful men don’t have a college degree.  Curious to know who they are?  So were we.  The list includes Microsoft founder Bill Gates, entertainment guru David Geffen and Oracle’s head honcho, Larry Ellison.  Impressive, to say the least.

Not all of us can be the next Bill Gates, but there are some great positions that offer fine earning opportunities for the next ten years.  In no particular order, they include:

•    Air Traffic Controller – That’s right – you might not be able to travel the globe, but you can sure direct those big birds filled with people who do.  You can also expect to earn around $102,000 annually.  Not a bad way to build a retirement nest egg.

•    Sales Managers – More specifically, a non-retail sales manager can expect to earn around $60,000 annually.

•    Fire Marshals or Fire Fighting Prevention Supervisors – One of the noblest professions to be had can net around $60,000 a year.  With certifications the only educational requirements, these are fine positions to have.  Your management resume should include some experience that highlights your leadership skills and abilities.

•    Elevator Installers and Repairers – Imagine the panic of being caught on an elevator between floors.  Become a hero – and a well paid one – by learning to get folks to safety.  And while you’re at it, earn close to $59,000 each year.

•    Nurses – There’s always been a great need for those willing to help those who can’t help themselves.  Nursing is not for the faint-hearted, but if you can do your job well, expect to earn between $54k and up to $215,000 each year.

•    Tractor Trailer Truck Drivers – Become a part of America’s resources for moving goods and commodities and be rewarded handsomely with salaries of up to $300,000 each year.  Keep in mind, you’ll generally start with a more conservative salary of around $35,000.  We’re told, however, the growth is limitless and the income potential is up to each individual.  An effective resume for these positions should include some experience with heavy machinery and you’ll also need to acquire proper licensing.

•    Real Estate Brokers – Know how to read an appraisal and what LTV means?  Then you have the makings for becoming an excellent real estate broker.  Your income potential starts at close to $60,000 in a year’s time.  And by the way, LTV means: loan to value.
