Making the Career Transition After Serving in the Military

Those who choose serve in this country’s military have already accomplished far more noble milestones than many in the country they defend. Military personnel arguably have some of the most important positions found anywhere in the world. Still, upon returning to a more civilian way of life, there are a few roadblocks that seem to get in the way as they begin the transition.

A military resume is usually quite formal and all-inclusive of the applicant’s many achievements and citations. Not surprisingly, it can often be intimidating to interviewers who realize they have disciplined applicants in front of them who are trained to confront daily tasks and obstacles in a far different manner. While it can be unfair, it’s quite significant for those who have families to support and then enter the job market only to be told they’re over qualified.

While it’s important to present a professional resume, there are a few tips that can bridge the difference between the focused and detailed military resume and the professional resume that might not be as articulate. Your first task is to define the civilian career objectives.

While your accomplishments during your military career are important, it’s crucial to redefine those parameters so that they become useful in a traditional job setting and most importantly, that you present the solution for a company’s problem. If you can approach it from an interviewer’s point of view, you might able to gain a bit of perspective in the process.

Any educational advancements made during your military career should be included, especially if they’re related to computers or language. Bi-lingual applicants are always in big demand. If you’re fluent in Mandarin Chinese, include it. You never know when the company finds itself researching the Asian market. If you gained skills that allow you to recognize when a computer network is vulnerable, you can be sure that’s a big plus on a resume. With so much emphasis placed on security, those with abilities such as these will always have a job.

Finally, and this might prove quite difficult, you’ll have to step outside your military persona. Your best bet is to assume your interviewer has no idea of how to differentiate one military branch from the next. As always a cover letter is always an excellent idea and can often reveal a bit about the applicant. While the job market remains competitive, the discipline gained during your time spent with the military will serve you well – as long as it doesn’t intimidate the hiring manager.

Make 2010 Your Year – Land the Right Accounting Job

Accountants make the world go round. They provide vital services for every business in the world, are responsible for locating errors and often, they are responsible for uncovering illegal activities. Still, those in this field can’t imagine doing anything else, regardless of the sometimes heavy burden they bear. Whether you’re a recent graduate or are looking for a new challenge, it may be time for a new job. An accountant sample resume can provide insight into what employers are looking for in terms of work histories, education and skills.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predict a “much faster than average employment growth”. They credit new financial regulations and laws, closer scrutiny of a business’s finances and the overall expected growth in the number of businesses as reasons for this increasing need for qualified and educated accountants. New computer technology will demand a new breed of accountants who can combine technological advances with the traditional accounting laws and procedures.

One exciting new accounting specialty is that of forensic accounting. With so many financial scandals in recent news, those who are qualified in thorough investigations with the ability to recognize irregularities and possible, illegal activities will continue to be in big demand. Considered white collar crimes, these accountants also engage in contract disputes and criminal financial transactions such as money laundering and bankruptcies. They often work with investigators from various law agencies and will likely be called upon to testify from time to time in a court of law. It requires a certain dedication and attention to detail.

Those most successful will also continue their educations with advanced courses that allow promotions and new opportunities as this field continues to expand.

It’s a fast paced specialty, but one that is both challenging and rewarding. It’s also one more incentive to update a resume. Again, one place to start is with a sample of an accountant resume. It’s one of many ways to bring yourself current with the latest trends in terms of what employers are looking for. Whether you’re composing a new resume or just updating your experience, ensuring it is current is crucial if you’re to redefine your career goals.

Accounting is a challenging career, but the opportunities for advancement are endless for those wishing to redefine their parameters. As we bring in a new decade, it can also symbolize a new energy towards one’s dedication to his line of work.

Why Fashion Trends are Similar to Resume Writing Trends.

There’s no denying the importance of proper grooming and a great looking power suit during an interview; they go hand in hand. But are there similarities between fashion trends and resume writing trends? You might be surprised to learn most career coaches say, “Absolutely!” It’s all about confidence in both your appearance and what your resume tells a potential employer about the well dressed candidate in front of him. And guess what? There are trends in proper resume etiquette, too.

Strange as it may sound, there are psychological reasons in linking fashion and our careers. It all comes back to our need to present the image of an organized, efficient and likeable candidate. After all, we don’t spend two hours meticulously applying make up or shining our shoes unless there’s good reason. Those reasons, generally speaking, are our wedding day and interview day – and don’t let the irony get lost in that declaration.

So what do resumes and fashion have in common? Consider these parallels:

Just as you want reassurances from the neighborhood dry cleaner that your lucky suit will be ready for the big interview, you go through the same process with your resume writing. You want reassurances from others that it’s error-free, well organized and contains everything it should.

A crisp linen suit in good taste is to modern day as the polyester suit was in the 1970s. Same theory applies to your resume – today’s resumes are focused, streamlined and don’t contain information such as a social security number or even the high school you graduated from. Not too many years ago, that was standard on the professional resume – along with our fraternities and sororities.

Less is more – Today’s contemporary resume is generally a single page that contains everything an employer will want to know; there are those instances, however, that two pages are acceptable. Again, the proper dress etiquette for interview day is a nice suit that fits well, isn’t bulky and presents a uniform and well dressed candidate. Less jewelry and please – less cologne. A survey some years ago revealed many interviewers confessing to redlining a perfectly suitable candidate because his or her cologne overwhelmed him during the interview.

It really is all about the attention to detail. Leave the flash for the weekend; for that Monday morning interview, both you and your professional resume should be consistent and conservative.

What to Look For – and What to Avoid – When Selecting a Resume Writing Service.

Finding a good job is difficult enough without stressing over whether or not your resume is the best is can be. There are so many things to consider and you may find yourself asking the wall questions like:

Must resumes have complete sentences?

How can I be sure I have the best resume?

Am I missing anything?

Is a cover letter absolutely necessary?

To say it can be overwhelming is an understatement, at best. This is usually when the decision’s made to consult a resume writing service. There are many out there – and the vast majority of them will provide all the assistance you need to ensure the final product is an excellent resume that will demand potential employers take notice. Still, there are those who have less than noble intentions. We’ve put together a few guidelines that should provide you everything needed to select the best resume writing service.

Does the service you’re considering offer any guarantees?

How long has the service been in business?

Do their administrative assistant resumes differ from an engineering resume? There is a difference – a big difference – in what should and shouldn’t be included in different occupations.

Are they a full service company? Will they provide help with writing the perfect cover letter or thank you letters?

Do they offer services to help you submit your job resume?

Are they available around the clock?

Is their website helpful? Does it include helpful articles, tips and ideas for maneuvering the job market?

Do they offer transparent pricing and policies?

There are many job applicants who are not really familiar with the dos and don’ts of resume writing so they end up being frustrated waiting for that job interview. Usually, a resume is submitted with a cover letter but this is an optional decision. You can still find the details below to be useful in making your resume stand out from the rest of the job seekers’ files.

How to Make Job Hunting Easy and Successful

Job hunting is harder right now than it has ever been. If you look at the statistics, they say one thing. They insist that the unemployment rates are down, at least in places like the United States and in parts of Europe. That is a very nice theory. In practice, however, it does not quite hold true. In fact, job seekers are having a difficult time all over the world. Personally, one need only look at the comments received on this blog to realize that; at that point, sympathy and empathy are immediate reactions. It is a competitive jungle out there right now — but if you keep reading, you might find things a bit easier.

The first key to job hunting successfully is to know what you want. You need to have some goal in mind. Naturally, for most of us, that goal is to be employed, but in order to drive yourself and to be properly motivated, you have to be just a little bit more specific than that. For instance, would you be happy with a minimum wage job at a fast food restaurant? There is nothing wrong with that by any means — a job like that can help you get some kind of experience and it is typically ideal for high school students as well as students in their first or second year of undergraduate school. However, many of us simply want more than that. We want a job somewhere within the bounds of our chosen field of study.

That is where job hunting can get a little bit more intense. If you want a job that can take you places, a job that offers room for advancement and worthwhile opportunities, then you have to have a good resume. That is not at all negotiable. It is a necessity these days. The job market is so intensely competitive that you have got to have the best possible resume you can build. Now, where some of us run into trouble is the fact that we do not have a lot of work experience. Many of you have probably faced this conundrum: a hiring manager tells you that you do not have enough work experience to work with their particular company — but you cannot get experience if no one will hire you. Tailoring your resume, making it look good, can go a long way towards helping you get over that hump.

You also need to supplement your resume with a well written CV. That is an abbreviation for curriculum vitae, and what that does is allow you to be more detailed and more specific than your resume allows. Your CV can be longer and more thorough, you can really chronicle your skills, attributes, and qualifications.

The last step in successful job hunting involves including a cover letter with each and every resume you send out to potential employers. You need to specifically tailor each cover letter to the position for which you are applying, and tie it into the skills you have to illustrate how you can bring your experience to the position.

The Key to Creating Resume Objectives

Your resume career objective could be the key to whether or not you get the job to which you are applying. This objective is one of your first chances to tell your potential employer what you want in life, where you plan to go in terms of your jobs, your skills, and your qualifications. Most importantly, it will let him or her know precisely what you think you can bring to the position which you are trying to fill.

The most important thing to remember when you are applying for a job – and, indeed, when you are writing your resume and tailoring it for that job – is that you are competing with every other applicant who applies for that position. At this point, several things become extremely crucial. First of all, it is absolutely imperative that you know the difference between a CV and a resume. There is a limit on how long a resume should run. It should never be longer than one to two pages. Usually that second page will only contain a few lines anyway. If it runs on too long, the hiring manager could just cast it aside without paying all that much attention to it.

Once you understand that difference, you also need to know how to write a resume. Of course this means knowing how to set up all the details about your employment and educational history, as well as any special skills and relevant qualifications. In short, you want to say as much as you can while actually writing as little as possible. Above all however, it is absolutely imperative that you know how to craft the kind of resume career objective that will actually catch the hiring manager’s eye and hold his or her interest.

Since we have established that you are in a competition, it is the objective of all the job seekers applying to a job to present themselves in the best light possible. You want to outshine your competition. Your career objective can help you do that. When written correctly and thoughtfully, it can really get you noticed. The one thing to remember is that your resume career objective needs to be as precise and concise as possible. Do not run on and on forever. These can be tailored to the specific job to which you are applying. If you do not think one of your objectives will help you get the job, simply leave it out.

The most important thing your objective can do is prove that you have given a lot of thought about your career and where you want it to go in the future. That can show potential employers that you are a serious contender. It can be hard to get this across, however, since your objective does need to be rather small. However, you can teach yourself the art of putting forth a lot of information using very little words. You simply want to outline your career goals.

A career resume objective is an essential part of the resume writing process. It may take practice to get it right. However, once you do, you have the opportunity to seriously impress your future employer.

How to Write Resume Objectives Properly

The job market is incredibly competitive right now; sometimes a well written, well executed resume objective can mean the difference between getting hired for your dream job and being passed over for another candidate. Given the current economy, many of us simply cannot afford the risk of being passed over. It is better not to risk it, especially over something as relatively simple as a clear, concise objective.

Many people make the mistake of beginning their resume with a poorly written or executed resume objective statement. This part of your resume is so important, you simply cannot risk going that route. For all of you job seekers out there, here are some examples of what you definitely should not do when writing your objective, and why. Trust, as resume help, the following information is invaluable.

Example Objective 1: To attain a responsible and thought provoking position wherein the level of my education and my work experience will be a valuable application.

There are several problems here. For starters, by making such qualifying remarks as “responsible” and “thought provoking,” the job candidate here is sort of pointing out the obvious. No one wants an irresponsible or dull job. Moreover, the writer here is detailed where he or she does not need to be, and vague where he or she should be detailed. For example, what educational and work experience does the writer have? How can it be valuable to the position?

Example Objective 2: Looking for a position in sales with the opportunity to further my career.

Believe it or not, the worst thing you can do is make some trite statement about wanting to advance in the position. When you make this part of your resume objective, you run the risk of seeming entirely uninterested in the job itself, and more interested in making more money.

Example Objective 3: Looking for a challenging position with an innovative company which will benefit from my skills, abilities, and experience in project management, operations, and buying.

An objective like this, quite frankly, is just boring. Begin your resume this way, and the hiring manager may be too bored – and too put off – to continue reading it. Your potential employer will easily be able to tell that you are simply writing your resume from his or her point of view. You may think that you are being impressive here, but honestly, you are not showing the hiring manager who you really are. You are trying too hard to impressive, and the results of something like that can be disastrous.

In the best resume, the resume objective will instead answer the question of, “What is in it for me?” That may sound selfish and self serving, but when done correctly, it will be far more impressive than simply telling the hiring manager what he or she wants to here. Mention how much experience you have in the field for which you are applying; try not to mention anything about advancing your career or utilizing your skills without saying what they are. You can approach things from the employer’s standpoint in your cover letter; your resume needs to focus on what the employer needs and why he or she needs you.

With the economy still struggling and the unemployment rate distressingly high, there are a lot of job seekers out there right now. In particular, students are graduating with bachelor’s and master’s degrees, only to find that they cannot get hired anywhere. It is not at all atypical to go for months and months waiting to hear back from someone, even if you have filled out fifty, sixty, seventy applications and put your resume out there wherever you possibly can. All of this can be disheartening to even the strongest person. After a while, we start feeling completely Unemployable – capital “U” necessary, of course – and start thinking about getting the word tattooed onto our foreheads, just so we do not forget. Before you decide on something so permanent, though, check out a few of these tips. No matter what kind of job you are looking for, they are guaranteed to help you succeed.

The first thing all job seekers need to do is consider their interests. Sometimes, especially when you are just starting out and do not have a lot of work experience, you will have to broaden your horizons away from your major. For instance, if you are interested in literature, you can think about becoming a tutor, a copy writer, you can think about writing articles, you can even think about simply working in a bookstore. Trust that, in all of those cases, when potential employers see “Literature major” or “English major” listed on your resume, cover letter, and curriculum vitae, they will definitely be interested. If you are interested in science or medicine, working in a pharmacy or a pharmaceutical company is also a possible choice. If you have peripheral interests which are in some way related to your chosen field of study, you can look into appropriate job opportunities in those areas as well. And, of course, if there is something you are interested in even though it is not related to your major – go for it. Beggars cannot be choosers after all, and when you can do something that interests you, well, you are already ahead of the game.

Job seekers always need to keep their resume updated as well, even if it is just a rough, sketched in template. That way, it will always be at the ready when a new job opportunity comes up; all you have to do is fill in the specific details. If you do not know how to write a resume – learn! It is really not that hard, and there are plenty of tutorials available out there to help you craft a great one. Insofar as that goes, getting your name out there never hurts either. Create a personal web site. Whenever possible, include your portfolio on there. As well, you should never underestimate the value of social and professional networking sites. More and more employers and companies are even turning to MySpace. Having a page there, and on such places as LinkedIn, Facebook, and JobFox can be more helpful than you might think. You can also get some great connections there.

You also need to remember how important a cover letter is. In particular, you need to target both your cover letter and your CV – and your resume, for that matter – to the individual positions to which you are applying. For instance, if you have done some volunteer work which garnered experience that would be beneficial in a particular position, make sure you let your prospective employer know that.

Most importantly, as hard as it may be, job seekers need to learn patience – and never, ever be too hard on yourselves. Stressing yourself out is just going to make the whole process worse, plus you will lose confidence in yourself. Self confidence and self worth are just as important as an excellent CV, cover letter, and resume. You have to let these employers know that you truly believe you are the best person for the job.
