I graduated from college in two thousand and five into one of the worst job markets imaginable. I went on interview after interview and sent out resume after resume to no avail. Many applicants overlook the importance of cover letter which is just as significant as the resume. HR professionals say that a well-written cover letter help to make a great first impression which is an important job towards a coveted interview.

Cover letter needs to go with the resume and explain why the resume is important

“The cover letter and resume are your sales brochure,” he says career coach Mark Burch from Harrisburg (North Carolina) in an interview to The Charlotte Observer. “Cover letters should be tailored for each job,” he adds.
“It’s to your advantage to address your letter to the hiring manager or someone who can get you the interview,” Burch says.

Burch suggest that making extra efforts in your job application will get you further in your application process. For instance, try to avoid putting “To Whom It May Concern” in your cover letter. Do some research instead and find the name of the person in the company who makes hiring decisions.

The whole purpose of the cover letter is to tell the recipient why he or she should even bother to read your resume, Burch said. You have to emphasize your interest in the company and what you would bring to the position. Be specific.

“Provide examples of your accomplishments and demonstrate your ability to help the prospective employer make money by hiring you,” he said.

Just like your resume, don’t get too wordy in your cover letter.
“Your cover letter should be one page and consist of three to four paragraphs. It’s best to keep your resume at no more than two pages. Most resumes and cover letters will receive 60 to 90 seconds at the most,” Burch said. “You need to capture interest within the first 30 seconds to keep the reader’s attention.”

Think of the cover letter as part of the required preliminary work to get the interview.

“The interview gets you the job, but the cover letter and resume lead to the interview,” Burch said.

The old good editing and double checking will never hurt. Make sure you take time to read through your resume and cover letter some time after you have written them. Remember, these two taken together are the brochure that sells you.

The first thing to remember regarding your cover letter is you want it streamlined, to the point and no more than a single page.  Anything longer than that, you run the risk of duplicating information that’s already included in your professional resume.

You don’t want it to be redundant; after all, if it’s an advertised position you’re applying for, you can be sure there are a stack of resumes the employer must work his way through.  Three or four paragraphs will usually suffice for a cover letter.

Begin with an introduction paragraph that states the purpose:

• Please find enclosed a copy of my current CV for your consideration.  I am interested in the current position you have available in your Accounting Department and believe I possess the skills and qualifications outlined in your job announcement.

After a brief introduction, begin your second paragraph that highlights your educational and career experience:

• I received a forensics accounting degree from the University of Florida in 2007 and since graduating, I accepted a position with my current employer.  I have taken several continuing education courses in an effort to remain current with the various technological advances within my career specialty. These courses are provided in detail within my CV, along with the specific responsibilities that define my current position.

Your next paragraph should provide a bit of insight into your goals and should also serve as a brief introduction to the candidate behind the cover letter:

• Because I recognize the importance of certain trends within the accounting sector as a whole, I have remained current with what is sure to become the preferred accounting methods.  Due to major changes in the sector as a whole, such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the need for accountants to remain ahead of the curve and focused on ensuring businesses remain in compliance is absolutely crucial.

Once you have hit the high marks of what your CV encompasses, begin your final paragraph that might read, in part, like this:

• Again, I appreciate any consideration and look forward to hearing from you.  If there is anything else I can provide, please feel free to contact me at your convenience.

Finally, close your CV cover letter with, “Sincerely”, your typed name and signature above that.  Remember to double check sentence structure, spelling errors and proper punctuation.  Don’t forget: your cover letter is your first introduction to a potential employer; and as such, it’s all about the first impression.
