All About Writing An Internship Resume
How to use that Internship Resume to make the first good impression!
The increasing availability of man power has led to a parallel increase in demands from recruiters. Judgements on recruitment of fresher’s today, is largely dependent on vocational training & experience rather than conventional education. This requires that a student takes on voluntary projects, training or internships to make a good impression and also sometimes, to better understand their own skill sets. This is where an Internship Resume comes to effect.
Using the resume to present your aspirations
At this juncture, you are welcome to highlight your objectives over all else. It is only in later stages, that your objectives are expressed through your experience. State your ambition and your field of interest in an approximately 100 words introduction. This must summarize your primary goal and reason you wish to intern at the chosen organization. An example would be: “A student of Journalism, I wish to study the functioning of a publication from the inside, by interning at a leading publication house such as your esteemed organization, to gain on-field exposure that would lay a foundation for my career path as a feature writer.” You could also use the introduction to make a mention of your previous internships, if any, or linked projects.
Detailing your education
An internship resume has to detail your aggregates, certifications, extra-curricula’s & projects. This helps the organization understand your complete personality, convincing them that you as a trainee will add value to their time. Some organizations are particularly fond of high graders, while others want a refreshing personality, a sports fan, to bring in some popcorn while the match is on!! Jokes apart, interns today are treated better, for they bring a fresh creativity on board and that creativity can only be gathered through the details.
Simplicity & Modesty
Yes, you have been a psychology topper, three times in three years. But the professional world cares more about their own achievements. While you keep the language used in your resume simple, it is necessary to keep a modest tone. State facts but subtly. For example, rather than using a bold font under the header achievements, add a statement in your introduction. “My yearning for the subject earned me three consecutive awards for highest scores in Organizational Behaviour. I now wish to explore this subject on the professional front with the help of an institute such as yours, with a rich experience of 28 years in the field.” Made your point, but with the required amount of modesty.
An Internship resume follows the rule, ‘market to sell’. The rich exposure that internships offer would help you market yourself to recruiters who appreciate & value vocational training. Writing this resume would definitely help you detail your resume years later, with utmost ease – simply because you did it right the first time. So do write and be ready to serve that popcorn and with a smile!!
