When You’ve Lost Your Job and are Having a Financial Meltdown

What Now?  How to Cope with Financial Meltdown After You’ve Lost Your Job

It makes no difference if we’re expecting to become a casualty of the recession or if we’re blindsided when the boss announces lay-offs and you discover yours is one of the positions cut; the fact is, it’s overwhelming and more than a little frightening.  Suddenly, we’re losing sleep and wondering how we’re going to make the mortgage payments.  Before you go into full-panic mode, keep reading for focused ideas on how to turn that melt-down to an upward climb.

Finding job in financial meltdown can be hard. Good resume can help

Good resume can help in financial meltdown

First Things First

Your first goal should be to polish your resume.  Ensure it’s current, accurate and don’t forget to add those college credits you’ve acquired since the last time you updated it.  Need help with your resume?  Advice is readily available if you seek it out.  One great place to start is   Grand Resume.  We have plenty of sample resumes to help you kick start this task.

If it’s been a few years since you’ve been in the job market, you should consider the advantages of an online resume.  There are many job boards and agencies that allow you to build a profile and upload a professional resume so employers can find you.  The majority of companies also have electronic methods of submitting resumes and credentials via their websites.  Take advantage of those websites.  Also, keep track of who you’ve submitted inquires to, who has received your resume and who you’ve been in contact with.  This will prevent you from dual submissions.

Be Sure to Find the Silver Lining – It’s There

If you were unhappy, but felt trapped in your previous position, now’s the time to rethink your career options.  Although it’s likely not financially feasible to go back to school full time, what you can do is consider an online course or two while you have time.

Don’t Get Discouraged

It’s easy to become discouraged, especially in this economy, but it’s important to not let that discouragement dictate your moods and outlook.  You’re the only one who can land that job – no one else can do it for you.  Although enjoying a financial meltdown after losing your job sounds enticing, the fact is, it’s simply not an option.

Network and Network More

Now’s a good time to network with others in your field of work and reconnect with those you’ve lost touch with.  You never know what you might discover.  Notify associates that you’re actively seeking a new position and that you’re open to offers.

Remain Calm

Finally, don’t panic and begin pulling all of your investments and emptying your nest egg.  Remember, job losses are temporary and very few go through their careers without facing this kind of loss at some point.  Everyone must take a step back, at some point, and rethink their options.  Just be sure to perfect your resume, take a deep breath and jump back in.  Often, it’s times like these that propel us into bigger and better things.
