The Top-Rated and Best Employers of 2009 – Who Shined?

The Top 20 Companies Around the World Worth Working For – Who’s the Best for 2009?

How would you define the best employer to work for?  Would it include the generous benefits?  Flexible work schedule?  Or would it be a combination of many things?  Although an excellent salary, great benefits and a boss anyone would love to have are all important, there are a few other considerations we believe define the best of the best.

Top 10 employers in 2009

Top 10 employers in 2009

We’re nearing the end of 2009 and we asked: “Who were the top twenty companies to work for this year?”  Even we were surprised at the final tally.

- Home Depot - That’s right – Home Depot made our list and for many reasons.  The housing bust is slowly beginning to recover.  Home Depot not only managed to keep its head above water, but with no small commitment on its Board of Directors, even posted profits.  Now that the tides are beginning to turn as people slowly begin to consider refinancing their homes for a bit of home improvement, Home Depot is rewarding its workforce with raises and bonuses.

- Shell Oil - The world’s largest oil company has a new CEO on board – and he’s dedicated to not only keeping Exxon Mobil, who lost the title of largest oil company to Shell, at bay, but also growing the employment rosters.  The oil giant is offering some enticing incentives: generous sign on bonuses and a health care plan we’re all envy of.

Google ranks as the top employer in the world for hiring college graduates.  It knows where its future lies: the new up and coming engineers and coders.  It’s no secret Google acknowledges its employees as the driving force behind its massive success.

Coca Cola - That’s right, the liquid refreshment giant was one of the best employers of 2009 and has a promising future and big plans for 2010.  It’s a great gig if you can get it.  Attractive benefits packages, yearly raises and bonuses and a focused group of folks at the helm to ensure profits continue to rise.

Toyota - In a time when the “Big 3″ were busy collecting bail-out money, Toyota and Nissan were busy reporting profits.  With plans to open new plants across the country over the next few years, Toyota is shaping up to be even more major competition for traditional car makers.

The United States Government - Specifically, the law enforcement sector of the U.S. Government has positions located all over the world.  2009 was a defining year for such agencies as the FBI, CIA and others as it saw its federal employee rosters increase.

Wells Fargo - If the housing bust is truly over, then this means a need for loan officers is on the rise.  Wells Fargo managed to keeps its customers resting easy at night with its solidified efforts made during 2009 to prevent as many foreclosures as possible.  This alone makes it one of the best of 2009.

Hewlett-Packard - The computer and printer hardware giant is another global company that kept its head above water and avoided many of the cutbacks and lay-offs its competitors couldn’t avoid.

Abbott Laboratories - Always on the lookout for the brilliant scientific and mathematical minds to develop new drugs, this is one company that has it all: fantastic benefits, amazing salaries and the option to work nearly anywhere in the world.

Chevron-Texaco - Another oil giant, they increased their engineers dramatically in 2009 in an effort to stay on the cutting edge of technology.

Starbucks - Let’s face it, America is addicted to the caramel no-fat lattes that made the coffee house giant what it is today.  It’s known for offering its employees bonuses and competitive salaries.  Even as 2009 saw many store closings; it went all out to transfer as many employees as possible.

Walt Disney - You don’t have to live in Florida to be a part of the Disney team.  Many of its animators actually work from home.  This makes Disney Corporation and excellent 2009 employer.

None of these sound viable to you?  No worries – brush up that excellent job resume and consider the remaining Top 20 Employers of 2009:

  • Southwest Airlines
  • Apple Corporation
